CBD Oil For Pets: Is it Safe?

We are all aware of the plethora of examples of how CBD works wonders to people. It can help you deal with your chronic pain, insomnia, anxiety, and etc. And but do you know that you can share those benefits with your beloved furry friends?

Try googling “CBD for pets,” and you will be surprised to see plenty of brands already offering pet-friendly CBD products. Thus, it is no doubt that several people have already started to start medicating their dogs with CBD.

Although giving CBD to pets is starting to become a common practice, there remains very little research about it. So, is it really safe to give your pets their daily dose of CBD?

According to Forbes, the American Veterinary Medical Association cannot say whether or not veterinarians are allowed to use CBD oil for pets because of insufficient studies to back any claim. In a document it released, the organization stated that CBD is illegal for use because of federal regulations.

However, the document entitled “Cannabis: What Veterinarians Need to Know” revealed there is no acknowledgment of evidence that shows any toxic effect from CBD products. Furthermore, just like in humans, any medications administered boils down to correct dosing.

Veterinarian Dr. Cornelia Wagner recommended starting any pet treatment with the lowest dose possible, around 0.05 mg/kg/day. The daily upper dose limit for CBD-based products is about 1 mg/kg. You can gradually increase the dose if no adverse reactions are noted, usually every 5 days or until you notice the desired effect. Just make sure that your weekly increase does not exceed 0.05 mL.

Based on the animal cases brought in vet clinics for toxic reactions, animals will usually experience the effects of CBD from as quickly as 5 minutes to as long as 96 hours.

Unlike humans pets (especially dogs) have a more complex endocannabinoid system. This means the effects of CBD is much stronger.

But with the recent legislation of the 2018 US Farm Bill, it is hoped that more researchers will conduct an in-depth investigation on how CBD really works on pets. For now, just make sure you are meticulous with your purchases. Inquire about the ingredients and sources of CBD before administering them.

For those who are already giving their pets CBD, you obviously know how they dislike its smell and taste. They won’t probably take anything by mouth unless it is their favorite treat. Thus, administering CBD is a big challenge for many paw parents.

So how can you ensure that your pets will get their daily dose of CBD? Check out the list below.

  1. Drop it straight into their mouth. Believe it or not, this is one of the most effective tricks you can do. Although it sounds challenging, sublingual administration ensures that the CBD oil goes straight into the bloodstream and takes effect faster. This method is recommended for large breeds.
  2. Do a little deception. Deceive your dogs with their favorite treats. Simply add the recommended dose to one of the sides. Then, make sure to flip it to the other side when giving it to them so they won’t smell the oil.
  3. Use peanut butter. Most pets can’t resist the taste and smell of peanut butter. Who does, anyway? You can drop the oil to a spoonful of peanut butter or on their favorite toy. Masking the CBD oil will allow them to lick the peanut butter with CBD oil while enjoying every second of it.
  4. Mix it with their favorite food. Start with a smaller dose first and gradually increase it so the bitterness won’t stand out to them.
